Urban Age Task Force Athens: Shaping Cities in an Urban Age
Online lecture with Professor Ricky Burdett (LSE), Athens’ Mayor Kostas Bakogiannis, Professor George Petrakos, University of Thessaly, and Professor Lila Leontidou, Hellenic Open University
“Shaping Cities in an Urban Age”: On 11 February 2021, the Hellenic Observatory and the National Bank of Greece host an online lecture with Urban Age, the international joint research programme by Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft and LSE Cities. As cities struggle with the combined pressures of the pandemic and economic stress, the impacts of urban form on well-being, inequality and resilience are brought into even sharper focus. Using research from the Urban Age programme, the illustrative lecture reviews how urban planning, governance and design are critical to shaping urban lives in the 21st century. The lecture will include new research on the city of Athens and is part of Urban Age Athens Task Force’s work. Since the beginning of 2020, the Urban Age Athens Task Force operates as a partnership between the City of Athens and the Urban Age programme to address key priority areas in Athens’ urban development.
After a welcome by Kevin Featherstone (LSE), Ricky Burdett (LSECities) will elaborate on the interrelations between urban planning, governance and design and urban live. Then, Kostas Bakogiannis, Mayor of the City of Athens, will comment on what he hopes from the collaboration with LSE and the Athens Urban Age Task Force. Afterwards, Professor George Petrakos, and Professor Lila Leontidou will respond to Ricky Burdett, respectively from an economic and a sociological perspective. The event will close with a discussion amongst the speakers and Q&A with the audience.
