"Transatlantic relations in the age of ‘America First’ — implications for Germany and Europe"

A lecture with Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and expert for foreign and security policy

With regard to the current developments in the USA, the dynamics of the transatlantic relations must change, says Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and expert for foreign and security policy. As first speaker of the new event series “Germany Listening“, Stelzenmüller spoke about “Transatlantic Relations in the Age of ‘America First’ — Implications for Germany and Europe" and discussed her positions with an international group of students afterwards.

Stelzenmüller insisted that Germany and Europe must take on more responsibility for their own fate. It was necessary to tackle common challenges in foreign and security policy together, if the European Union wanted to continue promoting a liberal world order. Also Germany must not only take on more responsibility in this regard, but also invest more.

The USA remained an important partner for Germany. Therefore it was of specific importance to establish good relationships between both countries, also beyond government level, Dr. Stelzenmüller said. To extend an exchange to the civil society should be considered essential.

"Germany Listening“ is a new event series of Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft and the common master program International Relations of Humboldt University, Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Potsdam. International guests from politics and science express and discuss their points of view and their expectations towards Germany and its role in Europe and the world with students.
